The story (1 Samuel 17:32–50)
The Philistine army had a giant soldier named Goliath, who wore heavy armour and shouted rude things about God. All of Israel's soldiers were too frightened to fight him. Then young David, a shepherd boy, said he would go, because God had helped him protect his sheep from a lion and a bear. With just a sling and a smooth stone, David trusted God, and the giant came crashing down.
